Eberswalde university for Sustainable Development inaugurates Biosphere Reserves Institute

On 29 November 2019, the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development inagurated the Biosphere Reserve Institute. With the establishment of the Biosphere Reserves Institute and the accompanying development of an international Master’s programme “Biosphere Reserves Management”, the HNEE is breaking new international ground: For the first time, a University establishes a scientific institution dedicated to the comprehensive support and further development of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

The German biosphere reserves enjoy a good international reputation. However, measured against the tasks defined by the sustainable development goals of the United Nations, there is room for improvement even in Germany. “But the capacities of the actors in biosphere reserves must also be further strengthened internationally if the concept of Biosphere Reserves is to make the desired contribution to solving burning issues,” says Uli Gräbener, Managing Director of the new Biosphere Reserves Institute. It is necessary to find innovative practices for the land use of the future. Research is essential in order to find these practices and to accompany them in the long term. The new institute, supported by three of the four departments of the University, will close this gap.
